Jocko served as a justice of the peace and his wife Mollie operated the telephone switchboard and ran the local post office. The Little Jocko’s menu includes typical burger joint items, including hot dogs, fries, chicken strips and milkshakes. To satisfy popular demand, the Knotts brothers moved to a brand new building in 1962, at the corner of Tefft Street and Thompson Road. They painted the walls with cattle brands, including that of Captain William Dana, the original recipient of the Rancho Nipomo land grant. In addition to his many other roles, Jocko owned a mechanic’s garage in Nipomo, rumored to have sold booze during Prohibition.

They started out serving barbecue on Saturdays and Sundays and provided horseshoe pits under the pepper trees for entertainment. This at this location, George gave up the saloon operation across Thompson in 1957. Eventually, Fred and George took it over to use for additional seating, since their barbecues had substantially increased their business. Jocko died in 1952, and his sons Fred and George closed the saloon to open a new restaurant and bar in 1957.

Jocko’s restaurant, first conceived and operated by his sons George and Fred, is now operated by Fred and Sandy’s children. They carry on the tradition and the name that had brought a modern-day fame to Nipomo. Sometime during 1925, Jocko and “Bull” Tognazzini (who owned Bull’s Bar and Restaurant in San Luis Obispo) opened a saloon/watering hole at one end of the garage called “Jocko’s Cage”. During the “flapper forties”, there were slot machines placed periodically in the bar. Emery had eight sons who helped run the saloon or “tended bar” over the years. One of Emery’s sons was Ralph “Jocko” Knotts, Jocko was the second licensed driver in Nipomo, he was also “Justice of the Peace”.

They “branded” the walls of their new building with cattle brands of former Nipomo ranches as well as those of current owners. Included is the brand of Captain William C. Dana, original owner of the 38,000 acre Nipomo rancho grant to whose family the Knotts bear relationship. Jocko’s traces its roots back to 1838, when Emery Knotts established a saloon in Nipomo, a decade before the Gold Rush. He employed his eight sons to work the bar, including Ralph “Jocko” Knotts.
Mollie was the first telephone operator in Nipomo and also a post mistress. Together they raised seven children; George, Patrick William (“Pookey”), Adela (“Sissy”), Marie (“Nunie”), Fred, James (“Beagle”), and Richard. In 1886 a fire burned an entire block in the area of the saloon, The building was relocated to the west side of Thompson Street in the block just south of the present Jocko’s restaurant.

Part of the Jocko’s family, this little take-out spot was established by Richard and Patricia Knotts in 1973.
